French driver detained in Italy over inert Akeron MP missiles

A French truck driver, Régis Normand, has been detained in Bari, Italy, for three months following the discovery of four Akeron MP anti-tank missiles in his vehicle during a routine ferry inspection. While MBDA France has confirmed that the items were inert test models intended for development and training exercises, Italian authorities are investigating the incident as potential arms trafficking due to inconsistent documentation and improper marking.

The missiles, which lack pyrotechnic material and operational capability, were reportedly being transported from Crete to the Paris region. The investigation highlights a significant logistical error: the equipment lacked the required inert markings and had been covered with blue tape, masking the standard yellow and black regulatory bands. MBDA France has acknowledged responsibility for the marking failure.

Normand’s defense maintains that he was conducting a legal transport mission authorized by the French Ministry of Armed Forces. As the legal proceedings continue in Italy, questions have been raised regarding the level of diplomatic intervention the French government will provide to resolve the administrative discrepancy between the two nations.
