French Education Minister faces union opposition over new school mandates

French Minister of National Education Édouard Geffray has introduced several new directives affecting schools, sparking opposition from the SNES-FSU teachers' union.

One major policy makes the November 11 commemorations, marking the end of World War I, mandatory in all schools. The SNES-FSU has expressed concerns regarding this mandate, stating that the compulsory nature of the ceremony poses “pedagogical and more broadly political problems,” particularly given rising global nationalism and militarism.

Additionally, the Minister has called for increased severity in evaluating French spelling and language usage during national exams, such as the baccalauréat and brevet. This move toward stricter linguistic standards has met resistance from union representatives, who argue that the focus on spelling can fuel declinist sentiments rather than providing students with the actual tools to master the language.
