French education sector faces management and demographic challenges

As the new school year begins in France, educational leaders and unions are highlighting distinct challenges regarding management and demographics.

The CFDT Education Formation Recherche Publiques has expressed concerns regarding the working conditions of school management personnel. The union cited a lack of state preparation for exceptional circumstances, such as heatwaves and cyberattacks, which often force staff to act with minimal notice and contradictory instructions. In response to these pressures, the ministry has agreed to modify the exam calendar to avoid afternoon sessions.

In the Academy of Lille, Rector Sophie Béjean has outlined priorities focused on student success and protection. A significant challenge identified is a demographic decline, with student numbers expected to drop by approximately 2% this year and potentially 20% by 2035. While this may allow for smaller class sizes and better supervision, officials are working with local authorities to reorganize school maps to maintain educational proximity, particularly in rural areas.
