French education system faces wage declines and infrastructure crises

French educators and unions are raising alarms regarding the deteriorating state of the national education system. A report from the Senate Finance Commission indicates that French teachers have seen a decrease in real remuneration of between 15% and 25% over the last two decades, noting that effective salaries have fallen below those of other active workers with at least a bachelor's degree.

In addition to financial concerns, school staff report significant challenges regarding infrastructure and working conditions. Issues include inadequate facilities to handle rising temperatures, a lack of personnel in 73% of establishments, and the presence of asbestos in some buildings. Unions such as SUD éducation have highlighted the impact of climate change, noting that heatwaves are occurring earlier and lasting longer, often leaving schools without proper cooling resources or management plans.
