French education system shifts focus on student social competencies
The French educational landscape is undergoing shifts in how student relationships and social competencies are managed. Current frameworks include the pHARe program to combat bullying and the introduction of empathy training for kindergarten and elementary students. A multi-ministerial strategy aims to develop psychosocial skills in all children by 2037, treating relational abilities as a matter of public health.
Other initiatives include education on affective and relational life, peer mediation, and restorative justice circles. However, recent reports indicate a shift in institutional support; several academies have reportedly canceled long-standing training programs for restorative justice scheduled for the 2026 school year. This move has led to questions regarding whether the changes stem from ministerial instructions or budgetary restrictions.
