French educators protest staff shortages and school resource gaps

Educational staff and parents in various French regions are protesting against deteriorating conditions at the start of the new school year. In the Lyon metropolitan area, the Collectif des lycées en éducation prioritaire (CLEP) has organized strikes at several high schools, including Brossolette in Villeurbanne, Faÿs in Villeurbanne, Brel in Vénissieux, and Doisneau in Vaulx-en-Velin.

Protesters cite severe shortages of staff, including social workers, nurses, educational counselors, and teachers. They also demand the return of these schools to priority education status. In Sommières, parents and teachers held a peaceful demonstration at Lucie-Aubrac high school following the sudden closure of a grade 11 class due to a lack of teachers, which has resulted in class sizes increasing to 37 students.

Across these regions, the lack of resources and personnel is being highlighted as a major obstacle to effective teaching and student learning.
