France faces multi-sector strikes and protests over energy rates and fuel costs

France is experiencing widespread social mobilization across several sectors. Energy workers, including employees at EDF, Enedis, and Engie, have launched significant strikes to defend the ‘tarif agent’. This historical benefit allows approximately 140,000 employees and 160,000 retirees to access electricity and gas at highly preferential rates. The movement follows a report from the Court of Auditors, which described the cost as ‘disproportionate’—estimated at over 700 million euros for EDF in 2024—and called for the rate to be brought into compliance with real energy values.

Simultaneously, fishermen have staged protests against rising fuel costs and deteriorating working conditions. This included a blockade of an oil depot in Fos-sur-Mer that immobilized about 50 tanker trucks, though the blockade was eventually lifted with police assistance. The fishermen are demanding meetings with the Minister of Fisheries, Catherine Chabaud.

Other sectors, including police officers, healthcare workers, and university staff, are also participating in demonstrations to demand better pay, improved working conditions, and increased funding for public services. These actions signal a period of heightened social tension in the country.
