French expatriates confront banking access hurdles

Opening a bank account in France can be complex, requiring specific documents such as a valid ID, recent proof of address and income verification. Guides advise preparing a complete dossier to avoid delays, and compare the benefits of traditional branch services with fully online platforms, which offer faster, digital‑only procedures but may limit personalized advice.

The French financial sector advisory committee (CCSF), at the request of the French minister of the Economy, has launched a national questionnaire to assess the difficulties French citizens living abroad face when accessing banking services. The survey, running from 10 July to 4 September 2026, found that 72.8 % of respondents reported problems such as account closures, demanding documentation, high fees and obstacles to exercising the right to a bank account, highlighting a growing strain on the administrative and economic link between expatriates and France.
