French families face 6,172 euro average cost in child's first year
According to data from Crédit Agricole's Sofinscope, French parents spend an average of 6,172 euros during the first year of a child's life. This budget covers birth preparation and initial needs, with the primary expenses being diapers and hygiene products (48%), childcare (42%), and childcare equipment (36%).
Financial pressure is significant, as 89% of parents report that childcare costs are difficult to sustain. Furthermore, 67% of parents find that expenses in the years following the birth actually exceed the initial first-year costs. To manage these expenses, many families rely on personal savings or seek out second-hand goods.
Regarding specific childcare services, the Fepem Observatory of Home Employment reports rising costs. By 2026, the projected monthly net cost for full-time childcare is expected to range between 250 and 450 euros for a childminder, and between 400 and 600 euros for a home nanny. These increases are attributed to wage revaluations and inflation.
