French Family Rescued from Vourou Gorge in Greece

On the night of 5 August, a French family of four became trapped after missing a marked trail in the Vourou Gorge, Western Mani, Greece. A 112 call at 22:00 prompted an immediate response by the Kalamata Fire Service, the Kardamyli Police Department and the volunteer civil‑protection group GAIA.

Rescuers worked in darkness and difficult terrain for about two and a half hours. All four family members were found unharmed and escorted to safety, with the operation concluding at 00:30 under the coordination of a fire‑service officer. The effort involved four firefighters, police personnel, twelve GAIA volunteers and three local citizens. GAIA reminded visitors to avoid hiking in gorges after sunset, stay on marked paths, carry proper equipment and call 112 promptly in emergencies.
