French farmers prioritize autonomy and direct sales in livestock production

Livestock farmers in France are increasingly focusing on operational autonomy and direct-to-consumer sales models to mitigate market volatility and supply chain risks.

At Les Lamas du Tilloux, Anne-Laure and Olivier Ducrocq have expanded their operations to include Charolais cattle and sheep, specifically targeting self-sufficiency in straw and forage. By acquiring additional land to grow cereals, they aim to avoid reliance on external suppliers, particularly during years of supply shortages or price fluctuations. The farm also utilizes alpacas for wool production and land clearing services.

In the Lamballe region, Marine and Maxime Odie of EARL de La Pironnais are utilizing a similar model of sustainability and direct sales. Since taking over the family farm in 2018, the couple has integrated Charolais cattle breeding with a direct sales approach, maintaining a close connection to consumers while managing pasture-based livestock production.
