French film about Samuel Paty returns to theaters with educational tools
The film ‘L’Abandon’, which depicts the final days of history teacher Samuel Paty before his assassination in October 2020, is returning to theaters. UGC, the film’s co-producer and distributor, is offering school screenings specifically designed for middle and high school students.
To support these screenings, a pedagogical kit has been developed for teachers and students. Accessible via the Eduscol platform and zerodeconduite.net, the kit includes factual documentary resources, a chronology of the case, legal follow-ups, and educational activities to facilitate classroom discussions. The kit suggests the film is suitable for students starting from the ‘quatrième’ grade.
The film has been classified as ‘Tous publics’ (all audiences) by the Centre national du cinéma, though it carries a warning that the constant tension surrounding the real-life terrorist event may affect sensitive viewers. Notably, the film does not depict graphic violence or the attack itself.
