French firefighters announce strike notice through October
French professional firefighters have announced a strike notice spanning from September 8 to October 20 to exert pressure on the government during critical legislative and budgetary windows. The mobilization aims to influence the presentation of the civil security modernization bill on September 8 and the parliamentary vote on the first part of the budget on October 20.
Key demands include increased resources to manage rising emergency workloads following a summer of intense wildfires, massive recruitment for the approximately 44,000 professional firefighters currently in service, and the rapid implementation of the civil security modernization law. Unions are also seeking improvements in purchasing power through a revaluation of the index point used for civil service salaries, as well as better career progression and compensation for professional staff.
Discussions with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez in August reportedly left union representatives disappointed, as promised additional funding was not slated to materialize until the 2027 budget. The unions emphasize that their specific professional needs are inseparable from the broader struggle for better conditions and pay within the territorial civil service.
