French firefighters continue strikes despite government funding offer

Professional firefighters in France are continuing strike actions despite a government announcement of an additional one billion euros in funding over five years. The mobilization, which includes a strike notice effective from September 8 to October 20, 2026, is driven by demands for increased staffing, better working conditions, and improved funding for departmental fire and rescue services (SDIS).

The unrest follows a particularly demanding summer of 2026 characterized by intense heat and significant wildfires. While statistics show that 97% of the 20,523 fires recorded in 2026 were contained before exceeding 10 hectares, unions argue that the operational pressure has pushed personnel to the point of exhaustion.

Labor representatives, including the CGT, highlight structural issues such as aging equipment and insufficient professional staffing levels. They note that relying on volunteers cannot fully compensate for the lack of professionals, which can lead to delayed response times when reinforcements must travel from greater distances.
