French firefighters launch national mobilization for more resources
Professional firefighters in France have launched a national mobilization to demand increased staffing, better health protections, and improved technical resources. The movement, led by nine representative unions, includes a strike notice active until October 20. Demands are driven by an intense wildfire season, during which approximately 98,000 hectares have burned across the country since January. There is significant opposition to the civil security modernization bill presented in early September. Both unions and the Association of Directors of Departmental Fire and Rescue Services (Andsis) have criticized the legislation, arguing it fails to provide structural solutions for evolving risks like climate change and increasing emergency medical calls. In some regions, such as Eure, the strike has seen 75% of professional firefighters participate, requiring the use of requisitions to maintain emergency services.
