French firefighters launch national strike over resource shortages

French professional firefighters have launched a national strike to protest a proposed civil security modernization bill, which unions describe as lacking sufficient ambition and resources. Following an intense summer of wildfires and extreme heat, labor representatives expressed deep frustration after meetings with the Ministry of the Interior, claiming the government's legislative draft fails to address critical shortages in personnel and equipment.

A primary demand from the inter-union group is the hiring of 21,000 professional firefighters to replace roles currently filled by volunteers who are struggling to meet increasing workloads. Since 2002, emergency interventions have risen by over 30%, with emergency medical assistance now accounting for 87% of call-outs. Unions also highlighted the need for updated vehicles and technology to combat more frequent and severe climate-related disasters.

The strike movement, which includes various unions such as SUD, Unsa, CGT, and CFTC, is being conducted via badge wearing to minimize impact on emergency response capabilities. The protests are expected to culminate in a demonstration at the Champ de Mars in Paris on September 29.
