French firefighters strike over funding and resource shortages
Professional firefighters in France have initiated a strike running from September 8 until October 20. The labor movement is driven by demands for increased funding, better equipment, and additional personnel to manage growing operational pressures.
Union representatives, including the CGT in the Manche region, report that many local fire and rescue services (SDIS) are facing deficits. There are concerns that insufficient investment in vehicles, training, and materials, alongside staffing shortages, will hinder future emergency interventions. While firefighters must maintain a minimum level of service to ensure public safety, the strike aims to address exhaustion and the lack of resources following intense summer wildfire seasons.
