French football clubs invest differently in training infrastructure

French football clubs are taking divergent paths regarding their training infrastructure. Stade Rennais has completed a 40-million-euro modernization of its Piverdière training center, funded by François Pinault. The expansion increases the site from 11.4 to 15 hectares and includes 9,000 square meters of new buildings, featuring a 43-bed dormitory, classrooms, and advanced medical and recovery facilities designed to retain young talent.

In contrast, Olympique de Marseille is facing challenges with its aging La Commanderie facility, which has been in use since 1991. Club officials, including academy director Lassad Hasni, have acknowledged that the current infrastructure is no longer sufficient for the club's professional and youth requirements. The facility currently manages four pitches for three youth teams and one professional team, leading to logistical difficulties. Officials suggest that a significant update or a relocation may be necessary to remain competitive with other major French clubs.
