French gambling regulator fines operator 500,000 euros
The French national gambling authority has imposed a 500,000 euro fine on a licensed online gaming operator, referred to as “Company X”. The sanction follows findings that the operator failed to meet its obligations regarding player identification and the support of individuals exhibiting excessive or pathological gambling behaviors. The investigation focused on thirty players identified as being at manifest risk between October 2023 and March 2024.
This regulatory action occurs amid a growing trend of users seeking “no-KYC” (Know Your Customer) platforms. While these platforms attempt to streamline user experience by reducing or delaying identity verification requirements—such as ID uploads or proof of residence—such practices often conflict with European regulatory requirements designed to ensure age verification and prevent gambling addiction.
