France government considers Sunday store openings to offset looting losses
The French government is considering allowing shops to open on Sundays through Christmas to help retailers recover from significant economic losses. This measure follows recent urban violence and protests that resulted in the degradation of over 2,500 businesses, including 1,161 cases of looting, vandalism, or arson, according to CCI France.
Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon stated that facilitating these openings is a direct response to requests from merchants. Labor Minister Jean-Pierre Farandou expressed a "principle OK," though he noted that such openings should be based on employee volunteerism and only for businesses that have been sufficiently repaired and are ready to resume operations.
The Alliance du Commerce reported that some businesses saw activity drop by as much as 90% during recent protest weekends. While the government aims to encourage mayors and prefects to authorize these exceptions, the effectiveness of the measure in fully compensating for the losses remains to be seen, particularly for smaller independent boutiques compared to larger chains.
