French Government to Honor Late Franco-Iranian Artist Marjane Satrapi

Franco‑Iranian author, illustrator and filmmaker Marjane Satrapi died on 4 June at age 56. She was best known for the graphic novel and animated film *Persepolis*, which gave a voice to the Iranian people and earned international acclaim.

A few days after her death, French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean‑Noël Barrot announced an official homage. He said, “Nous reconnaissons en Marjane Satrapi une immense artiste qui aura donné la parole au peuple iranien, qui a traversé tant d’épreuves.” The tribute will be organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will include the creation of a dedicated platform for Iranian artists in exile, to be launched before the end of June.

Barrot highlighted Satrapi’s long‑standing advocacy for women’s rights and democratic freedoms, noting that the platform aims to support courageous artists who bear witness to Iranian culture. The announcement follows Satrapi’s recent criticism of France’s policy toward Iranian dissidents.
