French handball leagues introduce new rules and season ambitions

French handball leagues are introducing significant changes and setting ambitions for the upcoming season. The ProLigue is expanding to a 16-club format with the addition of Draguignan and Elite Val d’Oise. A new ‘Bonus Penalty’ rule will be implemented during the regular season: in the event of a draw after 60 minutes, a seven-meter shootout will determine a bonus point. The winner of the shootout earns two points in the standings, while the loser receives one.

In the Starligue, Montpellier Handball aims to break its streak of third-place finishes by reaching the championship final and challenging Paris Saint-Germain. Following two consecutive Coupe de France titles and strong European performances, the club is targeting a top-four finish under the new playoff format.

Limoges Handball also enters the season with high expectations after finishing fourth last year. Despite losing key players, the club has completed an ambitious transfer window to maintain its status as a top contender. The team is focused on securing a top-four position to guarantee European League qualification.
