French health insurers see premium hikes of up to 10% in 2025
Data from French health authorities show that complementary health insurance premiums rose by an average of 6% in 2025, with the total contributions reaching €46.5 billion in 2024 – an 8.2% increase from the previous year, the strongest growth since 2012. The average monthly price of an individual mutuelle in France reached €83 in 2025; a 10% rise translates to roughly €100 extra per year for many households, heavily affecting seniors whose contributions are age‑linked. In addition, a new 2.05% tax on premiums, approved at the end of 2025 and effective in 2026, will further raise costs. Consumers are advised to compare offers using self‑made Excel tables to evaluate fees, coverage limits and deductible costs, especially now that policyholders can switch insurers anytime after 12 months without penalty.
The rising expenses are prompting many French households to re‑evaluate their coverage and seek cheaper alternatives, as the incremental burden adds to the broader increase in out‑of‑pocket health spending.
