France student protests escalate over education conditions
France is experiencing widespread student-led protests over the state of the national education system. Demonstrators are demanding improved school facilities, more teaching staff, and reforms to the Parcoursup university selection process. The unrest has led to the closure of hundreds of schools across the country.
Clashes between protesters and security forces have resulted in significant injuries, including 215 students and 715 police officers. Following an incident in Lens where a 15-year-old boy lost a hand due to a stun grenade, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez suspended the use of stun grenades during protests. The police watchdog, IGPN, has opened 18 investigations into alleged police violence.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has promised a plan to address the crisis by the end of October, though he has ruled out massive increases in educational spending. Participation in the demonstrations has varied by source, with government estimates placing Tuesday's turnout at 266,000, while student unions claim as many as 450,000 people took to the streets.
