French historical fortresses introduce new visitor experiences
Several historical sites in France have introduced new visitor experiences to showcase medieval and Renaissance heritage.
In Bours, a medieval-inspired garden has been opened to the public at the Donjon de Bours. Designed by landscape architect Jean-Baptiste Duchêne, the garden recreates a 15th-century pleasure garden featuring a lady's garden, a dream garden with a spiritual fountain, and medicinal herb plots. The project follows archaeological excavations in early 2025 that uncovered 14th-century residential remains and castle fortifications. Visitors can also participate in immersive guided tours featuring costumed actors.
Additionally, the Forteresse de Salses has launched a new tour route focused on the military functions of its 16th-century keep. Managed by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, the new path allows the public to access previously restricted areas of the donjon, offering views of the parade ground and access to renovated rooms. The fortress, which served as a border defense until the 1659 Treaty of the Pyrenees, remains a significant historical landmark and a frequent filming location for period cinema.
