French home care aides combat senior isolation and caregiver burnout

In the Ain department of France, home‑care auxiliaries employed by Centre Services provide more than routine assistance to elderly residents. Their regular visits offer companionship, monitor changes in wellbeing, and help seniors maintain social contact through shared activities such as meals, shopping, and walks, thereby reducing the risk of isolation and supporting mental health.

Health experts warn that informal caregivers—often family members—face severe burnout. Dr. Romain Rey notes that one in five French adults, predominantly women, act as primary caregivers, experiencing chronic anxiety, sleep disturbances and a heightened risk of premature death. He recommends setting clear boundaries, preserving personal time, and seeking professional help early to safeguard both caregiver and patient health.
