French household savings shift toward life insurance and green finance

French household savings are undergoing a significant shift in allocation. According to data from the Cercle de l’Épargne, the household savings rate stood at 17.4% of gross disposable income in the first quarter of 2026, notably higher than the Eurozone average of 14.3%. While the total volume of savings remains high, capital is moving away from regulated accounts like the Livret A and LEP, which saw net withdrawals of 10.4 billion euros in the first quarter, toward life insurance and retirement savings.

This massive pool of national wealth, estimated by the Banque de France at approximately 6,590.5 billion euros, has become a focal point for climate policy. Monique Barbut, the Minister for Ecological Transition, has proposed mobilizing these funds through the Caisse des dépôts to finance the green transition. This initiative aims to address the estimated 66 billion euros in annual additional investment required to meet France's 2030 climate objectives, targeting sectors such as thermal renovation and green infrastructure.
