French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez faces accusations of intelligence misuse
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez is embroiled in a political controversy following allegations that he directed intelligence services to target the La France Insoumise (LFI) political party. During a session at the National Assembly, LFI coordinator Manuel Bompard accused the minister of a ‘state scandal,’ alleging the fabrication of documents and abuse of authority to frame the party for recent weekend violence.
An investigation by Mediapart cited a territorial intelligence commissioner claiming they were instructed to falsely report that LFI was behind recent unrest. Nuñez has denied these claims, stating that intelligence services do not work on political parties and accusing LFI of ‘throwing oil on the fire’ to create a diversion. Bompard has announced plans to refer the matter to the Court of Justice of the Republic.
Nuñez’s career has been defined by high-level security roles, including serving as the head of the General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) from 2017 to 2018, coordinating anti-terrorism efforts, and leading the Paris Police Prefecture before his appointment to the Ministry of the Interior in October 2025.
