French lawmaker proposes ending Social Security reimbursement for thermal cures

French lawmaker Sylvain Maillard of Ensemble pour la République has announced intentions to propose an amendment to eliminate Social Security reimbursement for thermal cures. Maillard estimates the annual cost of these treatments at 260 million euros.

This proposal follows previous government discussions regarding drastic reductions in thermal care coverage, which aimed to save approximately 200 million euros. While such measures were not included in the 2026 Social Security budget, the debate may resurface during upcoming budget discussions. The Haute Autorité de santé (HAS) is currently evaluating the medical service provided by thermal cures, with a preliminary analysis expected in autumn 2026 and a full opinion anticipated by the end of 2027.
