French lawmakers propose ban on energy drink sales to under-16s

French parliamentary rapporteurs Yannick Neuder and Sandrine Runel have recommended banning the sale of energy drinks to individuals under the age of 16. The recommendation follows a report presented to the Social Affairs Commission of the National Assembly, highlighting the rapid growth of the energy drink market, which is projected to rise from 180 million euros in 2016 to 780 million euros by 2025.

The report expresses concern over aggressive marketing strategies targeting youth and the potential health risks associated with high caffeine and taurine intake. While these drinks are considered safe for the general population in reasonable amounts, the report notes they can cause cardiovascular and psychological symptoms in children and adolescents, particularly when combined with alcohol.

The findings are expected to inform potential amendments to the 2027 Social Security budget project. The report also noted the emergence of new brands like Ciao Energy, launched by content creators, which has drawn criticism from health professionals regarding their target demographic.
