French leaders call for dialogue amid youth protests
As youth mobilizations continue across France, political leaders and civil associations are calling for de-escalation and meaningful dialogue with the younger generation.
Bally Bagayoko, the LFI Mayor of Saint-Denis, has urged the government to prioritize a “political response, not a police response” to address the grievances of high school students. He noted that the state has been slow to respond to issues such as teacher shortages, lack of resources, and deteriorating school facilities. Bagayoko emphasized the need for the executive branch to provide reassuring messages to prevent injuries and to recognize the legitimacy of the youth's voice.
Simultaneously, the association Familles de France has called for negotiations to address the underlying anger of the youth. While the organization condemned acts of violence and property destruction, it argued that such actions divert attention from fundamental demands. The association raised concerns regarding the future stability of the country, specifically citing anxieties over employment, housing, energy autonomy, and the long-term financing of social solidarity systems like pensions.
