French left-wing leaders debate housing plans and political identity

Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the La France insoumise (LFI) presidential candidate, visited a construction apprenticeship center in Noisy-Le-Grand to discuss vocational training and housing policy. Mélenchon emphasized a plan for productive investment in the housing and construction sectors, aiming for 400,000 new homes annually through multi-year territorial planning. His proposal includes utilizing existing housing stock via requisitions or changes in usage, as well as promoting sustainable materials like wood, straw, and hemp.

Separately, Socialist Party leader Olivier Faure has called for a strategic shift among left-wing primary candidates. Faure argued that competitors should avoid defining their campaigns solely in relation to Mélenchon, suggesting that constant opposition to the LFI leader inadvertently strengthens his position. He advocates for the primary to establish a distinct social-democratic identity that offers an alternative political platform independent of Mélenchon’s influence.
