French literary market narrows to 461 novels for 2026 season

A total of 461 novels will be published in French bookstores between August and October 2026, a slight drop from the 484 titles in 2025 but close to the 459 released in 2024. The reduction reflects a broader trend toward a more measured output in the French publishing sector.

French‑language titles remain steady at 344, while translated works fall to 117 from 140 the year before, signalling publishers' cautious approach to foreign rights amid rising translation costs. Among the releases, a new novel by Amélie Nothomb is slated for a 150,000‑copy print run, underscoring that established authors still attract large orders. The season will also feature 68 debut novels, five fewer than in 2025, alongside works by seasoned writers such as Philippe Jaenada and Serge Joncour.
