French literary season begins amid challenging book market
The 2026 French literary season begins amidst a challenging economic landscape for the book market. Sales for books declined by 6.2% between January and June, with independent bookstores reporting revenue drops of 3.7% in July and 5% in August.
Despite these market difficulties, the season features significant literary milestones. Author Antoine Volodine has announced his retirement from writing, marking the end of a four-decade career. To conclude his work, he is releasing eleven simultaneous books under the pseudonym Infernus Iohannes, a project titled ‘Retour au goudron’ involving multiple publishers.
Publishers are looking toward the autumn period, which typically accounts for over 10% of annual fiction sales and includes the major literary prize season. Approximately 461 new novels are expected to be released by October.
