French literary season sees fewer novels despite active awards calendar
The French literary season is seeing a slight decline in the number of published novels, though the schedule for major awards remains highly active. Data indicates that 461 novels will be released between August and October, down from 484 the previous year. This decrease is primarily driven by a reduction in translated foreign works, which fell from 140 to 117 titles.
Despite the lower volume, the competition for prestigious awards is intensifying. The Prix Femina and Prix Médicis have released their initial selections, with several novels, including works by Anne Godard and Thélyson Orélien, appearing on both lists. Notably, the Prix Femina selection includes 33 titles, while the Médicis has selected 35. Observers also noted the rare absence of any French titles from the publisher Gallimard in the initial French selections.
The autumn awards calendar includes the Prix Décembre on October 27, the Grand Prix du Roman de l’Académie française on October 29, and the Médicis proclamation on November 2, followed by the Femina award on November 4.
