French livestock project protests lead to court case and municipal opposition
In the Basque town of Marienia, owners of a parcel are suing environmental groups and local opposition parties over a temporary shepherd's hut and the presence of sheep on the land. The plaintiffs seek the occupants' expulsion, demolition of the structure and daily fines, and have called a rally for August 4 outside the Bayonne tribunal.
In Verrie, Maine‑et‑Loire, a plan to build a 1.6‑hectare intensive veal‑calf operation for 560 animals has drawn sharp criticism from the Saumur and Verrie municipal councils and animal‑welfare advocates. The project, promoted by the SAS du Moyer, is defended by agricultural unions citing food‑sovereignty and regulatory compliance, while the final permit decision rests with the prefecture.
