French manga readers face increased site blocks under SREN law

The landscape for digital reading of Boys Love (BL) and yaoi manga is shifting due to increased legal enforcement and technical instability. French readers face a growing divide between free scanlation sites and official paid platforms.

Following the adoption of the SREN law in May 2024, French authorities, including Arcom, have expanded powers to block websites linked to manga and webtoon piracy via DNS blocking. This has led to the closure or instability of major francophone scanlation sites such as Japscan and Epsilon Scan. As these sites frequently change domain names to evade blocks, readers often face interrupted narratives and unreliable access.

Beyond legal issues, unofficial scanlation sites present technical risks. The emergence of fake mirror sites can lead to intrusive advertising, suspicious redirections, and variable translation quality. In contrast, official paid platforms offer stability through subscription or token-based models, though they require age verification and direct payment.
