French maritime safety initiatives amid rising drownings

In response to a surge in drowning deaths in France—274 fatalities, including 37 children, over the past two and a half months—authorities and NGOs have stepped up water‑safety measures. The Macif and the volunteer organization Sauveteurs en Mer (SNSM) launched a "Mini‑Sauveteurs" tour, bringing first‑aid workshops for children aged 7‑12 to the Château beach in Mandelieu‑la‑Napoule on 30 July. The program, which will visit 25 French beaches between 5 July and 3 August, aims to turn youngsters into active participants in emergency response, teaching them how to recognise hazards and perform basic rescue techniques.

Separately, SNSM divers rescued three recreational divers who had become lost after exploring an underwater wreck off the coast of Anglet. Six professional rescuers located the divers, two of whom were unharmed while the third was taken to Bayonne hospital for medical evaluation. Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns about beach and coastal safety in France and the role of volunteer rescue services in preventing loss of life.
