French military disciplines soldiers over Rhodesian flags

The French Ministry of the Armed Forces has initiated formal disciplinary proceedings against several soldiers following the circulation of images showing them displaying flags associated with Rhodesia. Rhodesia was a former southern African territory governed by a white minority before becoming modern-day Zimbabwe.

The incidents occurred in two separate locations: one involving personnel in Nîmes, southern France, and another involving troops deployed in the United Arab Emirates. Investigative outlet Mediapart reported that the images, which were shared on social media, featured soldiers holding the green and white striped banner with a central coat of arms.

The Ministry stated that the individuals have been identified and emphasized that the armed forces do not tolerate any manifestation of a racist, supremacist, or extremist nature. Officials noted that military personnel are held to requirements of exemplary conduct and neutrality, which extends to their social media activity. The Ministry also clarified that the two incidents were distinct and showed no evidence of collusion or structural links between the involved individuals.
