Ministry of Ecological Transition hit by sophisticated cyberattack
The French Ministry of Ecological Transition has confirmed it was the target of a sophisticated cyberattack that occurred last week. The attack specifically targeted messaging tools, prompting the ministry to implement security measures and report the incident to the public prosecutor.
As a result of the intrusion, several government websites became inaccessible on September 2, 2026, displaying maintenance messages. Affected services include the public consultation site for environmental matters and various regional administration websites. The National Cybersecurity Agency of France (Anssi) is currently conducting investigations following suspicions that certain user accounts were compromised.
While official communications initially referred to an IT incident, criminal actors have since claimed responsibility on a forum. According to the specialized site FrenchBreaches, an anonymous user has claimed to possess several thousand pieces of stolen data. The incident follows a series of recent cyberattacks targeting other French state institutions, including the tax administration and the Ministry of National Education.
