French mobile operators advance 5G while phasing out 2G
French telecommunications operators are undergoing significant network transitions. Orange has increased its lead in 5G deployment on the 3.5 GHz band, which Arcep describes as the “core band” for increasing network capacity and speeds. As of October 1, 2026, Orange reached 14,899 operational sites on this frequency, adding 361 sites in September. In comparison, Bouygues Telecom added 104 sites, Free added 94, and SFR added 58.
Simultaneously, the phase-out of older technology is progressing. Orange is implementing waves of 2G network shutdowns, including a major wave affecting several departments, including Brittany. This transition is driven by security, service quality, and energy consumption requirements. While mobile phones are the primary users, the shutdown also impacts specialized equipment such as elevator telealarms, remote surveillance systems, and certain medical devices.
Other operators have different timelines for their 2G shutdowns: SFR is scheduled to end its service on November 15, while Bouygues Telecom will phase out its network between November 15 and mid-December. The decommissioning of 3G networks across French operators is expected to occur between 2028 and the end of 2029.
