French mobile operators begin phased 2G and 3G network shutdowns
French mobile operators are beginning the phased shutdown of 2G and 3G networks to modernize telecommunications infrastructure. Orange has initiated the final major phase of its 2G extinction, starting in Nice on September 22, 2026, with subsequent waves scheduled for October across various departments.
Other major operators have established timelines for 2G discontinuation: SFR expects to finish by November 15, 2026, while Bouygues Telecom plans to complete its shutdown by mid-December 2026. Free Mobile, which relies on Orange's network for 2G roaming, will follow these transitions. Regarding 3G, the phase-out is expected to occur later, with most operators targeting windows between 2028 and 2029.
The transition poses challenges for legacy devices. Arcep data indicates approximately 2 million SIM cards still rely on 2G technology, including alarm systems, medical assistance devices, and connected equipment. Experts note that approximately 700,000 alarm and senior assistance transmitters may lose connectivity if they are not upgraded to 4G VoLTE-compatible hardware. However, the shutdown is expected to improve security by eliminating vulnerabilities like IMSI-catchers and promoting energy efficiency.
