French MPs propose constitutional change to protect regional languages
French Members of Parliament Peio Dufau and Paul Molac have introduced a constitutional bill aimed at providing greater legal protection and promotion for regional languages in France. The proposal seeks to amend Article 2 of the Constitution, which currently states that “the language of the Republic is French.”
The amendment would specify that while French remains the official language, it must do so “in respect of the use, promotion and protection of regional languages.” Proponents argue the current wording has been interpreted by the Constitutional Council in a way that restricts the use of languages such as Basque, Breton, Occitan, and Alsatian, even hindering local initiatives like bilingual street signs.
The bill has garnered support from 80 deputies across nine parliamentary groups, reflecting a trans-partisan effort. Supporters describe the move as a way to protect a “living heritage” that carries the history and identity of various French territories. An Ifop poll previously indicated that 77% of French citizens favor official recognition for these languages.
