Robert Ménard to face trial over refusal to marry Algerian national

The Mayor of Béziers, Robert Ménard, is scheduled to stand trial before the Montpellier Judicial Court on September 30, 2026. The case stems from his 2023 refusal to marry an Algerian national subject to an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) to a French citizen, citing suspicions of a sham marriage.

Ménard faces potential penalties of up to five years in prison and a 75,000 euro fine. The trial has gained significant political attention, with Bruno Retailleau cited as a key witness. Retailleau, a former Interior Minister, has previously expressed support for the mayor’s stance on public order.

While President Emmanuel Macron described the situation as ‘ubuesque’ and called for Ménard to testify, the President will not attend the proceedings personally.
