French municipalities launch local waste clean‑up initiatives
In the Pas‑de‑Calais department, the Communauté d’Agglomération de Béthune‑Bruay Artois‑Lys Romane organised a field action on cigarette‑butt litter. Volunteers displayed prevention posters, ran a quiz on the environmental impact of the 30‑40 billion butts discarded annually in France, collected 1,306 butts from parking areas and building surroundings, and handed out more than 200 pocket ashtrays supplied by Alcome. The effort was reported to have saved roughly 653 000 litres of water from pollution.
In the northern French town of Mons‑en‑Barœul, a "Mons Clean Up Day" was held on 12 September 2026. Residents were invited to join a collective waste‑collection run from 10:00 to 11:30, followed by a "village solidaire" offering anti‑waste tips, repair cafés, and DIY workshops on cooking, gardening and clothing. Participants could also donate recyclable items such as paper, corks, cans and lenses to local charities. The event was free and open to people with reduced mobility.
