French municipalities launch new youth and senior advisory councils
Several French municipalities are implementing new participatory democratic bodies to involve different age groups in local governance.
In Thouaré-sur-Loire, officials have launched a consultative Council of Sages for residents aged 60 and over. The council, consisting of twelve members serving three-year terms, aims to leverage the experience of retirees to provide constructive feedback on local projects and public interest debates. The municipality seeks to maintain balance through gender parity, neighborhood representation, and age diversity, with some members potentially selected by lottery.
In Fresné-la-Mère, near Falaise, a youth municipal council has been established. Comprising six children aged 10 to 14, the council will meet quarterly to propose local initiatives, such as the installation of a pumptrack for bikes and scooters. The members will also participate in local ceremonies and community events.
