French municipalities seek natural disaster recognition for property damage

Municipalities in France are initiating processes to seek official recognition of natural disaster status to assist residents facing property damage caused by environmental factors.

In Lévignac, local authorities are preparing a request for the 2025 period. Residents have reported significant issues, including cracks in building facades and shifting walls, particularly in the town center near the Save Valley. Officials attribute these problems to highly clay-rich soil, which reacts to heavy rainfall and flooding by impacting house foundations. The municipality has expressed frustration that neighboring towns have received disaster recognition while Lévignac has not for several years. Residents are encouraged to submit damage dossiers to the town hall by March 23, 2026.

Similarly, the town of Vandœuvre is collecting reports from homeowners regarding cracks appearing since the beginning of the summer. The city is inviting residents to declare damages to the insurance department to help build a case for a natural disaster recognition request for the year 2026, which will be submitted to the Prefecture in January 2027. Such recognition, if granted by the state, allows for insurance compensation through an interministerial decree.
