French music festivals face rising climate and financial risks

A provisional report released on October 15 by the Centre national de la musique (CNM) and the French Ministry of Culture reveals that nearly half of music and comedy festivals faced climate-related challenges in 2026. Of the 998 festivals surveyed, 49% reported encountering natural hazards, marking a 13-point increase from 2025.

Extreme temperatures were the most cited issue, affecting 76% of festivals, followed by storms (28%) and heavy precipitation (21%). Outdoor events appear to be the most vulnerable to these conditions. The report also notes more than 40 cancellations during the summer, including the Solidays festival, which was prevented from opening at ParisLongchamp due to heatwave concerns raised by the Paris police prefecture.

In addition to environmental factors, the Syndicat des musiques actuelles (SMA) highlighted that the economic model for independent festivals is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. Despite the music industry's turnover expected to exceed 2 billion euros in 2026, organizers face significant financial pressures alongside rising climate risks.
