French music industry protests tax cap on concert revenues

The French music industry is protesting a government tax ceiling that diverts significant revenue away from musical support and into the general state budget. While live music revenue has grown by 60% between 2019 and 2024, a 3.5% levy on ticket sales is subject to a legal cap of 58 million euros.

Industry professionals note that any revenue exceeding this cap is captured by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (Bercy) rather than being redistributed to support the sector or young artists. Projections suggest the ceiling will be exceeded by approximately 14 million euros this year, with Céline Dion's upcoming concert series alone expected to generate roughly 4 million euros in taxes that will fall under this cap.

As the upcoming finance bill approaches Parliament in early October, associations such as 'Tous pour la musique' and the 'Syndicat des musiques actuelles' (SMA) are demanding the abolition of this cap to ensure the industry's growth directly benefits the musical ecosystem.
