French National Assembly adopts comprehensive law against sexual violence

The French National Assembly has adopted a comprehensive legislative package aimed at combating sexual and gender-based violence. The bill, which includes 133 provisions, passed with 503 votes in favor and zero against, though the La France Insoumise (LFI) group abstained from the vote.

Key advancements in the text include the recognition of incest as an autonomous offense, the creation of specialized police units and judges, and new measures for victim protection and investigation. The legislation also introduces provisions for a specific leave for victims and enhanced online harassment regulations.

However, the bill faced criticism during debates. LFI members abstained, arguing the law lacks sufficient funding and fails to protect vulnerable foreign women, specifically noting the removal of a provision that would have prevented the issuance of deportation orders (OQTF) to women reporting violence. Additionally, the long-term cost of the law is estimated to be between 3 and 4 billion euros annually. The legislation now moves to the Senate for examination.
